During the Fall 2017 Semester, I had the remarkable opportunity to work as an intern with Intrepid Marketing Group. I’ve had internships or jobs related to marketing/public relations and the sports industry, but never at a place that combines the two. With that being said, I walked in with as much of an open mind as possible trying not to focus on getting better at only one task. I did this in hopes to gain the maximum amount of information Intrepid could offer. Any expectation that I had coming in, Intrepid exceeded.
Intrepid is a smaller company that operates with seven staff members. That’s not to say Intrepid does not do much by any means. Intrepid consists of the most driven professionals working to ensure their clients strive in their respected industry. I’ve had the privilege of working side by side with specialists who have been in the sports marketing industry for quite some time and they spared no piece of advice to share with me. The staff was welcoming to all interns and helpful to any adjustment needed from the very beginning. It can be difficult to find friendly, laid-back atmospheres like the one offered at Intrepid; even when an angry USPS employee decides to cause a scene in the lobby on a quiet Friday afternoon (ask Ann-Marie on this).
As a public relations major at North Carolina State University, I’ve been exposed to the importance of press releases, video script writing, media lists, social media content, executive summaries, and staying up to date on global and local marketing news. While I still covered those categories on a daily basis with Intrepid, my favorite thing to work with was the Google analytic overview data reports. Digital marketing data reports were a new concept for me and at first site, dreadfully confusing. Thankfully, the staff didn’t give up on me or my 7 million questions that came attached with this new concept. Instead, they answered every question I asked and directed me in the right direction so that I could learn the magnitude that digital marketing has in our industry.
A couple pieces of advices for the incoming interns or for those that look to intern in the future: Intrepid is a relaxed environment, DO NOT mistake this as an unprofessional workplace. As I said before, “Intrepid consists of the most driven professionals.” Everyone knows when to be funny and when to be serious, it’s crucial to find that line early. The staff at Intrepid is understanding of unexpected scheduling events. Just be upfront with them at the beginning or as soon as you know of something that needs to be changed so that they can make the proper adjustments. The phone may seem kind of intimidating at first, but I promise you get the hang of it after the first few times. Be aware of when Margaret Thatcher calls, she likes to check in from time to time.
I am truly grateful for the hands on learning experience I received as well as the trust they invested in me to complete projects for clients. And for this, I recommend this internship to any student or young professional exploring the public relations and marketing industry.
